U.M.Y. (United Methodist Youth)
Sunday School
Youth from grades 6 – 12 are welcome to our Sunday school classes. We have a variety of personalities in our Senior High (grades 9-12) and Junior High (grades 6-8) classes. Ms. Janie Sexton, mother of Amanda and Mallory, is the teacher of the Senior High Sunday School Class. They meet in the Kirk (Youth) Building.
In our Senior High class, we recently have completed a twelve-hour lock-in, lasting from 8pm to 8am the next day. This event summed up our summer classes, in which we studied about poverty in the United States and other countries, the conditions in those countries, and how all of us were Made to Make a Difference. Our goal was to show ourselves, and the church community, that we could make a difference, even though we are so young. With the help of donations from church congregation, we raised $600 for World Vision and gave $132 to the Family Resource Center in Lonoke. We bought 2 chickens and 2 goats, purchased $235 worth of medicine, paid for the education of 2 children, bought soccer balls, and donated $150 toward disaster relief. Through this project, our youth has learned that they DO have the power to change things.
United Methodist Youth Fellowship
Youth from grades 6-12 are welcome to join our kids on Sunday afternoons at 5:00 pm. There, Chris and Karen James, parents of Madison and Christian, voluntarily run the U.M.Y. meetings. A typical U.M.Y. meeting consists of fun, fellowship, and community service discussions, along with food and friendly competition. In recent years, we have completed a few community service projects, including:
- a trip to Mt. Eagle for 4 days and 3 nights; tasks completed were: clearing debris from and rebuilding a ropes course, cutting firewood for a local elderly woman, playing endless volleyball games, visiting a “boat chapel”, clearing twigs and branches that had fallen in hiking paths, and a reflection/prayer/song circle (led by Mr. Nix and songs led by Tyler Grady) at the end of every day.
- Trick or Treat for the Food Pantry; we went door to door to a few members of our congregation to receive donations for the food pantry. Donations before hand were also accepted.
- a yard sale; we raised money to go to both the Food Pantry and Vilonia disaster-relief.
- a trip to Vilonia for a day after a tornado; there, along with Mr. Nix and a few other adults, we donated money for disaster-relief to a local United Methodist church, and helped clear debris and house remains from a field.
- Turkeys; we collected and donated 20 turkeys for the Family Resource Center!
We also take pride in not only fellowship, but fun. Recent fun outings have included:
- Youth (summer) Swimming parties (2010)
- The Arkansas State Fair (2010)
- The Fletcher’s Pumpkin Patch (2010)
- Sugar Bowl Party (2011)
- Super Bowl Party (2011)
- The Arkansas State Fair (2011)
